Qiu wins first place at the 2024 Central Kentucky Regional Science & Engineering Fair
Maggie Qiu won first place in the Systems Software category at the 2024 Central Kentucky Regional Science & Engineering Fair for her HEVA project on 3D cranial CT segmentation.
Maggie Qiu, a student at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School (Lexington, KY), won first place in the Systems Software category at the 2024 Central Kentucky Regional Science & Engineering Fair for her project “Examining the Accuracy of Various Methods of Segmentation for 3D Images of Crania,” conducted with HEVA Lab director Dr. Hugo Reyes-Centeno. Working with the HEVA Lab — and with guidance from Dr. Amber Plemons and Leah Böttger — Qiu compared manual, semi-automatic thresholding, and watershed-algorithm methods for segmenting CT scans of human crania (drawing on the New Mexico Decedent Image Database) to evaluate their accuracy for downstream cranial analysis.
