UK-SPUS Archaeology Field School

HEVA members joined the 2023 UK–St. Paul University Surigao Archaeology Field School in Surigao del Norte, Philippines, directed by Dr. Hugo Reyes-Centeno.

HEVA members participated in the 2023 University of Kentucky and St. Paul University Surigao (UK-SPUS) Archaeology Field School at the Panhutongan Elementary School in Surigao del Norte, Philippines. The field school, directed by PI Reyes-Centeno, took place between 9-29 July. The field school was financed with support from UKinSPIRE, the National Science Foundation (EduceLab), SPUS, UK College of Arts & Sciences, and the OCSEAN Consortium, with additional logistical support from various local agencies, including the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Placer Municipality, and the Panhutongan Barangay.

HEVA participants included Samuel Koontz, then an undergraduate, and Bruno Athié Teruel, who joined the field school weeks after graduating from UK that May with dual bachelor’s degrees in anthropology and computer science.
